Taking it to Another Level
Expanding Upward – Inside an Existing Building
The most challenging portion of this project involved building a new “KIPP to College” second floor addition within an existing building. The project team cut slab inside the existing lower level to install footings for the new level above. Masonry, foundation, and shear walls were built through the first level to support a new elevated interior second floor, and existing columns were shored up to support the addition. Steel had to be erected and concrete poured within an indoor, elevated space, with all materials and equipment going through a set of standard double doors and up 15 feet.
KIPP to College
Carroll Daniel looks for ways to give back to the communities in which we work. Despite the fact that nationally, only 10% of low-income students of color graduate from college, over 80% of KIPP students pursue a college degree after high school. In honor of the KIPP to College expansion we were constructing—and our outstanding partnership with the Regional Managing Director—the CDCC team created the Ra’Chel Ford Scholarship Fund, giving $5,000 to a deserving KIPP student.
The Carroll Daniel team has been an amazing partner for KIPP Metro Atlanta Schools from the beginning phases of this project through completion. From preconstruction through close-out, they have exemplified professionalism, expertise, common-sense judgment, and creativity.
